AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy is simply the use of fragrances to evoke our highest emotions.  Our mind associates these scents with love, warmth, happiness and comfort.  Aromatherapy has been practiced widely for many centuries, but had been forgotten.  A renewal of interest have come about in the last few centuries. And, this form of healing is used especially in Great Britain, France and Italy. 

The father of modern aromatherapy is the French chemist,Dr. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse.  Dr. Gattefosse coined the term Aromatherapy, and he was mostly interested in essential oils for cosmetic and medicinal treatments.  He used aromatherapy essential oil in the treatment of war injuries during word war II.  Italian scientist conducted experiments dealing with the psychological effects of essential Oils between 1920 and 1930. Aromatherapy essential oil was studied for the effects on the nervous system; their stimulating and calming effects. The bacteria-destroying capacities of the essential oils were also observed.

Professor Paolo Rovesti, at the University of Milan, conducted research on the psychological effects of essential oils and treated patients with depression and hysteria.  He recommend the applications in different combinations. For example, for depression he recommended the combination of Jasmine, sandalwood, orange blossom, verbena and lemon oils. Treatments can only be with the purest of an aromatherapy essential oil.  The oils have been used to scent the body, beautify the skin and hair and uplift the spirit.

Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt had her feet rubbed with an ointment made from almonds, honey, Cinnamon and orange blossoms and her hands massaged with the oils of rose, saffron and Violet.  In order to seduce Mark Anthony, Cleopatra saturated the sails on her barge with floral fragrances and waited for him under a canopy of garlands of roses. The banquet floor was also carpeted with roses.  Wealthy ladies in ancient Greece and Rome were massaged with fragrant oils by their servants.  In England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, fragrant plants were used to scent linens, pillows and mattresses were stuffed with calming fragrances to provide a good night's sleep.  There were numerous uses of the aromatherapy essential oils in ancient times.  And, today the usage are becoming popular as one become aware of the benefits of this precious oil that is derived from the leaves, barks and flowers of plants.
